Welton Deshields Head of Security SGA Reports to Students By ALLEN ROSS Welton Deshields is the head of the security force this year. Mr. Deshields is twenty-six years old and is from Franklin. While in the army, he served as an MP for two years. As well as accepting the responsibilities of his position he is also a full time student. The security department here at Chowan has the right to enter any students room if he is suspected of an unlawful act. The security force here also works closely with the Murfreesboro Police Force. Mr. Deshields feels that thefts are the main problem on campus. Already this fall, a great number of wallets have been stolen. This seems to happen most often when a student falls asleep with his The Braves by Steve Newton door open, or even when making a short trip to the bathroom. Mr. Deshields sumed up the problem of thefts by saying “Don’t tempt people.” Chowan’s policy on alcohol is another main concern to students. If a student is found in the possesion of alcoholic beverages he can easily be suspended from school. Mr. Deshields testifies that if a student comes on campus drunk he will see that the person is acting as well as he can and not causing trouble; however if that person wishes to cause trouble, he could well find himself sleeping in the city jail. Mr. Deshields knows his responsibilities as Chowan’s security officer and I believe that he will be fair with everyone. By PHYLLIS HOLLAND The Student Government Association of Chowan College has held weekly meetings during this semester. During these meetings many ideas have been discussed and considered. Vice-Presidential elections were held in the Chapel Assemblies in order to fill that vacated position. Robert Walker was elected as the new Vice- President of the S.G.A. and has now taken over his position as Chairman of the Student Legislature. Student representatives have also been elected from each dorm. They are: BELK HALL —Patty White, Kathy Franklin, Betty Moores, Susan Rowe, Debbie Reece, and Jeannette Stephenson; JENKINS HALL — Kelly Bates; EAST HALL — Jim Carney, Robert Walker, and James Lassiter; WEST HALL — Tim Davis, Jack Jones, Tom Carella, Stuart Hall, Kevin Dalton, and Rick Brown; MIXON HALL — Joe Higgen- bofnam and Ray Wooten; PARKER HALL — Gary D’Oria, Robert White, Paul Traywick, Grant Mason, Barry Martin, George Bartolomew, Dan An derson, Charles Gupton, and Kevin Morris; and DAY STUDENTS — Deborah Brett, Tula Benthall, and Pat Owens. The S.G.A. is now in the process of locating a group for a Fall Concert. The final decisions have not been made at this time as to who wUl appear. There is to be a full student body election to decide who the students would like to appear at Chowan. Proposals for dances and movies are now in the process of being considered. Steve Gegg, Social Co-Chairman, is now in the process of getting each dormitory to sponsor some event on cam pus. The reason for this is so that the S.G.A. will be able to sponsor more concerts and dances on campus for the student body. At the present time everyone on campus is envolved in some type of preparation for the up coming Homecoming Weekend. The S.G.A. is sponsoring a float in the parade. During the week of Homecoming, it is hoped that there will be a movie shown here on campus. There will also be the parade, afternoon football game, and dance held on Saturday, October 18. Further proposals for this semester at this time include a Halloween Dance to be sponsored jointly with the Circle K Club. There are also plans in the making for the Chowan campus to sponsor a Gospel Concert. There will be informal groups here to perform from North Carolina and Virginia. It has also been announced that the Charlie Daniels Band will not appear on campus this fall. If there are any suggestions for student activities that any of the student body might have, please talk to your floor representative or any member of the S.G.A. Your ideas wUl be greatly ap preciated and will be considered by the S.G.A.
